В конце XVIII в. ведущие производители женской одежды представили на суд публики странный предмет одежды. Это был лиф, похожий на большой детский нагрудник (baby's bib), надеваемый с обычной юбкой. Для большего эффекта верхнюю часть лифа украшали кружева (to tuck a piece of lace). Богатые модницы покупали много таких лифов, и когда женщина хотела произвести большое впечатление на кого-либо, она надевала свой best bib and tucker. В обычной разговорной речи это выражение стало означать любой как мужской, так и женский элегантный наряд.

We shall be going to dinner at the Dorchester on Saturday, so I shall expect you to be in your best bib and tucker. — Мы будем обедать в Дорчестере в субботу, поэтому, я надеюсь, ты наденешь свой лучший наряд.
